Walt Disney World is getting ready to celebrate it’s 55th Anniversary on October 1. The park opened to the public on October 1, 1971. I’ve created an itinerary for a mini-trip you can take to Walt Disney World — and the theme is experiencing all the rides and restaurants in Magic Kingdom that have been delighting us for 55 years.
Imagine spending a Day in Disney World as if you had stepped back in time 55 years to October 1, 1971. This is what my itinerary will achieve for you: a low key and magical day, full of memories.
When Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, the park hours were 10 am to 6 pm. But they opened the gates early, at 8 am, because there were so many people waiting to get inside.
So that is how your day will begin. Be sure to get on the bus bright and early for rope drop. Since October 1 is a “Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party” day, day guests must leave the park by 6 pm. Perfect timing for our plan!
A big advantage is that crowds will be lower that day. The plan has you flying in the afternoon before, so you can still view the fireworks from outside the park, if you want to, from Fort Wilderness or the Contemporary Resort, for example.
You won’t need Lightning Lanes on this day to see the original rides and attractions!
Start your day by riding one of the Main Street vehicles — first thing — to Cinderella Castle (everybody else will be racing to get in line for Tron or Seven Dwarves Mine Train) From there, go straight to Storybook Circus within Fantasyland. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some characters starting their day by riding Dumbo!
Dumbo is an opening day ride; so is the carousel, it’s a small world, and Mad Tea Party. From there, before the Adventure Friends Calvacade at 11 am, you might go to either Frontierland to see the Country Bears Jamboree and Adventureland to see the Enchanted Tiki Room and ride Jungle Cruise or head in the other direction to Liberty Square to see Hall of Presidents and ride Haunted Mansion.
Have a “Citrus Swirl” snack at Sunshine Tree Terrace and lunch at Pinocchio Village Haus or Columbia Harbor House, all opening day eateries before the parade at 2 pm.
Wrap up your day on Main Street USA with a visit to Main Street Cinema (there is still a small screen showing shorts, but it’s inside Gift Shop) and the Bakery. Watch the Flag Retreat at 5 pm, a Magic Kingdom tradition for 55 years.
Then head to the Contemporary Resort (on the monorail or motor launch — they were both operational on opening day) for a quick service dinner before taking a Lyft to the airport.
The “A-to-E Ticket” Challenge
In 1971, you couldn’t just walk onto any ride—you had to budget your coupon book! This is a 1971 ticket book…

Here’s one with 2026 rides, just for fun…try to one ride or attraction from each category on October 1, 2026!

I came up with the idea of making this an “Emerald” kind of celebration day because the 55th wedding anniversary is called an Emerald Anniversary. So, it would be fun to wear green on that day, but you don’t have to, of course.
If you’re a Disney fan but you’re not able to be there on October 1, I will be publishing posts in October (right here on the blog) about how to celebrate that day in a fun way at home, plus recipes, a look back at the opening day and the official celebrations and more nostalgic look backs. Please come back in September to read those.
